Eggstravaganza......Noteworthy Needle

First she had us stitching on reading glasses, last year she had us stitching on craft pumpkins and this year she has us stitching on papier-mache egg-shaped eggs for Easter.  Janis is finding items we never even thought to use for our cross stitch and makes for a fun stitch.  These are stitched using paper mache eggs and stitched with #5 pearl cotton.  Janis recommends 2 strands, but when stitching the pumpkins I used 1 strand and it was easier to get through and I think the coverage was fine, but you can try both ways to test what you are most comfortable with.  The book of charts includes 5 charts to be done on the egg boxes, plus the same 5 charts done for stitching on Aida or linen.

The paper-mache eggs come unfinished so you will have to paint them, and they measure 8.4" x 11.6"

Quaker Style III..............Prairie Girls Sampling Needleart

What is so wonderful about these Quaker Samplers is that while the sampler as a whole is a fun stitch as you have so many different motifs included, but you can also grab the motifs and stitch just one to put on a small, needlebook, pincushion, fob, etc.  So if you don't like stitching the entire piece it is quite useful for other things.  This particular Quaker Style project was the creation of Majorie Massey.  She chose to stitch on 35 ct. linen, but you can use your favorite count, She used DMC 844, 646, 3768, 501 but Quaker also looks wonderful done in one color.  And check all out the small motifs, sheep, candle, potted plant, trees, birdhouse, basket, flowers, spinning wheel, etc.  Also included is an alphabet for monogramming.

Finished size is approx. 7" x 10"

Quaker Street....................Marjorey Massey

Majorie Massey is new to Salty Yarns and we're very excited about her designs.  Quaker Street is a  prime example of her style, a lot of detail, using only a few colors in a design, and most are monochrome.  Quaker Street is a monochrome stitched on a natural linen and she's stitched using DMC Color Variation 4220, Indigo.  But color is up to you as well as fabric.  This design is going to look great on a variety of fabrics and using a variety of colors.  So do your own favorites.  The design size is  Majorie does suggest using overdyed fabrics such as PTP Legacy (our suggestion) and use your favorite color of overdyed floss.

28 ct. - 21.25 x 11.50

32 ct. - 18.75 x 10.25

Finishing Made Easy...all the basics....................Sue Hillis Designs

So many needleworkers, who stitch beautifully, just pile up their finishes or store them in a box, never to be seen again.  They suffer from "Failure to launch."  The stitchers just don't know where to begin the next step or they know the next step but just can't take it.  Then there are those of us who are self-taught and can do the finishing, but we don't know the shortcuts others have learned or invented on their own.  This book will get you started in the right direction and with every finish the process will become easier to complete.  It includes how to :Prepare your stitching for finishing (includes what to use in cleaning your piece and what not to use), dome shaped finishing, square or rectangle finishing, circular finishing, lacing your piece, applying trims, bias finish, and cording instructions.  She has also included a few charts including 2 small alphabet charts for signing your work.  Excellent instructional book

I have learned to somewhat enjoy finishing.  It's the next step in the creativity I share with my stitching and it's practical too.  Because we have limited space on our walls and Easels (also known as a "stand-up or flat fold", offers a simple way to change our decor economically and seasonally without making additional holes in our walls.  This leaflet will give all the basics for creating the easel finish.  Easel making is not a difficult finish and once you have gone through the steps, you'll be surprised at how fun easels can be.  Included also is the chart for Hex Symbol shown on the cover.

Walk on the Beach..........................Erica Michaels Designs

Since our shop is at the beach, this design speaks to us.   Full of sand-colored neutrals and the lovely turquoise shades of tropical waters, it’s really a joy to stitch on the included 40 count silk gauze.  If you choose to stitch on your favorite fabric, go with a neutral similar to the background “linen” color so you get the same subtle contrast in the background patterns.  This is part of the silk gauze series of stitches so the 40 ct. gauze comes with the chart.  Fibers needed are:

Gentle Art- Caramel Corn, Huckleberry

Weeks Dye Works-Capri, Dirt Road, Island Breeze, Linen, Ocean

Finished size is approx. 2" x 4"

Silk Gauze Primer.........................Erica Michaels Designs

Linda is often asked - what is a good design to start with if I’ve never stitched on silk gauze? There are already several in her line, but these are designed specifically with that stitcher in mind. First, these are both stitched on 35 count silk gauze - it may not seem like a lot, but those little holes are huge in comparison to the usual 40 count! And, the silk gauze for both designs is enclosed in this chartpak. Next, both designs are small and simple while still giving you a good look at stitching motifs, letters, backgrounds, etc. The colors used in the designs offer strong contrast, making it a bit easier to see as you stitch. Finally, the instructions are a bit more detailed to help you along. Fibers used are:

Follow Your Heart: finishes approx. 2 1/4" x 1.5" uses Gentle Arts: Brethren Blue & Old Hickory and DMC 154 & 612

Kindness Matters: finishes approx. 2 1/2" x 2" uses Weeks Dye Works: Bayberry & Strawberry Fields and DMC 783 & 3823
