Project QuarantineStay Home and Stitch...................With Thy Needle & Thread

Project Quarantine: Stay Home and Stitch- When we were informed that we would have to quarantine, many people were frightened not only by the Pandemic but also the amount of time they would be stuck at home.  When stitchers found out they would be spending every day at home for weeks on end, they ran to their closets and pulled out their stitching.  Never have so many stitchers, men and women, had so much time to work on their projects and the flood of pictures on Instagram and Facebook shows how industrious they have been.  Brenda has designed this pincushion, pillow, picture (whatever it is to you) for you to have your own souvenir of this time.

Virginia - A Cumberland County Inspiration.............Heart's Ease Examplar Workes

An original needlework design by Theresa M. Baird.  Virginia-A Cumberland Country Inspiration is the 6th sampler in Theresa's 13 Colonies Series.  It made its debut at the Loudoun Sampler Guild in 2019 and recently won a First Place Ribbon at the 2020 Woodlawn Needlework Exhibit in Alexandria, Virginia.  As with most of the samplers in this series, Theresa gained inspiration from antiques from the State she's This.  The inspiration came from a rare and important antique needlework sampler wrought by Phebe Walton of Cumberland Country, Virginia in the 4th quarter of the 18th Century.   The sampler incorporates a number of specialty stitches, which are illustrated in the stitch diagram section of the instructions for this chart.  It is stitched using Belle Soie Silks by Classic Colorworks or Needlepoint, Inc. silks, or DMC.  The model was stitched on a fat half of 40 Lakeside Linen's Vintage Strawflower.  However should you decide to use a different count, here are the approx. design sizes:

28 ct. over 2 = 31 1/2" x 38 1/4"

32 ct. over 2 = 27 1/2" x 33 1/2"

36 ct. over 2 = 24 1/2" x 29 3/4"

40 ct. over 2 = 22"  x 26 3/4"

The majority of Virginia is stitched in Cross Stitch, but because there are a number of specialty stitches, Closed Herringbone, Spiral Trellis, Smyrna Cross, Algerian Eyelet, Backstitch, Over One, Tied Windmill, French Knot, Satin Stitch, Long and Short Stitch, Tent Stitch, Reverse Chain Stitch, Queen Stitch, Alternating Double Backstitch, Diamond Eyelet, and Rhodes Stitch.  Stitch directions are included in instructions with a total of 36 pages including chart and instructions.

Pins & Orts Stitching Companion....................Heartstring Samplery

Originally taught at a retreat at Salty Yarns, this 4" x 4" sized piece became a topper for an orts container with a matching strawberry fob for scissors, both to help the stitcher organize their stitching area.  The original container was from a metal container from Hobby Lobby and if you are able to get a metal tin of some kind to use you could also attach a magnet to hold your scissors so that your organization is complete.  If you can't find a metal container, any container will work.  This is shown stitched on 40 ct. Patriot's Brew from R & R Reproductions.  I also know 40 ct. is too daunting for some of you so just stitch on a more comfortable linen count, find a larger container, a basket or box and mount the design on that.  Stitched using Weeks Dye Works: Bark, Blue Spruce, Cattail, Curry, Fathom, Grasshopper, Kohl, Madison Rose, Merlot, River Rock, Sanguine, Teal Frost, and Whiskey.

Sewn in Friendship...Heartstring Samplery & Plum Street Samplers

Sewn-in Friendship is a collaborative project with Plum Street Samplers.  Each of the designers has designed their own chart which is sold separately, sharing the same title.  The two patterns were designed to fit together like puzzle pieces and could be stitched together on one piece of linen by omitting a column of stitches from one chart or the other, where they meet in the middle.  Both designs are stitched on 36 ct. A. Thomas 1882 "The Nellies"....................Hands across The Sea

This sampler is Welsh and is believed to have been about exotic animals that were brought by the circus to the valleys of Wales. The circuses toured to even the smallest of towns and in the 19th century, the development of the railways enabled circuses to travel further.  in July 1848 the town of Tregaron's population was treated to a procession of caravans, horses, bears, and elephants from Batty’s Travelling Menagerie. Some reports state that the elephant drank water contaminated by a lead mine and died shortly afterward. The traveling show -moved on, leaving either a dying or dead elephant behind.  Shown stitched on 40 ct. Ann Gardner 1723....................Hands Across The Sea

Ann Gardner of Pilerton Priery, did not record her age, but we suspect that she was a very young child and that this was her first attempt at stitching a sampler. She diligently recorded the alphabet although her spelling certainly needed improvement. While there are still Gardners living in the English village, we have been unable to find Ann's name anywhere and feel Ann was a diminutive of her given name.

Showed stitched on 53/63 count Sycamore Seedpod using Au Ver a Soie:2213, 4633, 2531, 2925, 3416, 3711, 3724, 4636, 5381, 5384, 5386

Death Rose Needle Case........................Fern Ridge Collection

There is a flower in the Snapdragon family names, "Death Rose."  In ancient times this flower was thought to have supernatural powers.  It offered protection from witchcraft and was believed to restore beauty and youthfulness.  As it begins to wither and fade, the center of the flower looks like a skeleton.  The purple silk thread in this design was made especially for Death Rose by Tweenway Silks.  The purple pearls change to green in different lights.  A little bit spooky!  Kit includes 28 ct. linen, quilt cotton lining, specialty beads, Treenway silk fibers, Treenway silk ribbon, rayon ribbon, waxer, wooden ruler and thread winder, interfacing, stitch witchery, instructions and needles.
