Based on Matthew 6:28, a Biblical passage in which Jesus was speaking to his disciples teaching them to be selfless and humble, to care for those that are in need, to speak the truth and not take advantage of others. He asked them to consider the birds of the air and the flowers of the field how they were content and did not worry. This is how he wanted them to also live; at peace with each other, and not striving for personal gain. While Beth does give us information on supplies she used, 28 ct. A 1777 Parliamentary report recorded a Parish Workhouse in operation in Catherington. A new Workhouse for the poor was constructed in 1835 and closed in 1935. Originally taught at a retreat at Salty Yarns, this 4" x 4" sized piece became a topper for an orts container with a matching strawberry fob for scissors, both to help the stitcher organize their stitching area. The original container was from a metal container from Hobby Lobby and if you are able to get a metal tin of some kind to use you could also attach a magnet to hold your scissors so that your organization is complete. If you can't find a metal container, any container will work. This is shown stitched on 40 ct. Patriot's Brew from R & R Reproductions. I also know 40 ct. is too daunting for some of you so just stitch on a more comfortable linen count, find a larger container, a basket or box and mount the design on that. Stitched using Weeks Dye Works: Bark, Blue Spruce, Cattail, Curry, Fathom, Grasshopper, Kohl, Madison Rose, Merlot, River Rock, Sanguine, Teal Frost, and Whiskey.

This sampler is Welsh and is believed to have been about exotic animals that were brought by the circus to the valleys of Wales. The circuses toured to even the smallest of towns and in the 19th century, the development of the railways enabled circuses to travel further. in July 1848 the town of Tregaron's population was treated to a procession of caravans, horses, bears, and elephants from Batty’s Travelling Menagerie. Some reports state that the elephant drank water contaminated by a lead mine and died shortly afterward. The traveling show -moved on, leaving either a dying or dead elephant behind. Ann Gardner of Pilerton Priery, did not record her age, but we suspect that she was a very young child and that this was her first attempt at stitching a sampler. She diligently recorded the alphabet although her spelling certainly needed improvement. While there are still Gardners living in the English village, we have been unable to find Ann's name anywhere and feel Ann was a diminutive of her given name.

First she had us stitching on reading glasses, last year she had us stitching on craft pumpkins and this year she has us stitching on papier-mache egg-shaped eggs for Easter. Janis is finding items we never even thought to use for our cross stitch and makes for a fun stitch. These are stitched using paper mache eggs and stitched with #5 pearl cotton. Janis recommends 2 strands, but when stitching the pumpkins I used 1 strand and it was easier to get through and I think the coverage was fine, but you can try both ways to test what you are most comfortable with. The book of charts includes 5 charts to be done on the egg boxes, plus the same 5 charts done for stitching on Aida or linen.
The paper-mache eggs come unfinished so you will have to paint them, and they measure 8.4" x 11.6"

Liz has a detailed step-by-step finishing video tutorial on Hello From Liz Mathews' to help you with your finishing.
Marjorie Massey has two charts in this pack, "A Bee Pincushion", and "Queen Bee Sampler." Also included is an alphabet for monogramming. Both designs are shown on 35 ct. linen DMC floss: 3799, 3726 and 316.
Bee Pincushion: 5.5" x 5.5"
Queen Bee Sampler: 7.1" x 7.5"
Marjorie Massey is a designer who likes monochrome or uses just a few colors, which I happen to love. In this design she does have a pallet of DMC colors used: 3799, 926, 3768, 924, 646, 645, but she also adds it would look beautiful as a monochrome. Prairie Sampler is shown stitched on a tea-colored fabric, our suggestion is 36 ct. PTP Legacy, however, any light fabric will be perfect.
The design size is approx. 12" x 8"
What is so wonderful about these Quaker Samplers is that while the sampler as a whole is a fun stitch as you have so many different motifs included, but you can also grab the motifs and stitch just one to put on a small, needlebook, pincushion, fob, etc. So if you don't like stitching the entire piece it is quite useful for other things. This particular Quaker Style project was the creation of Majorie Massey. She chose to stitch on 35 ct. linen, but you can use your favorite count, She used DMC 844, 646, 3768, 501 but Quaker also looks wonderful done in one color. And check all out the small motifs, sheep, candle, potted plant, trees, birdhouse, basket, flowers, spinning wheel, etc. Also included is an alphabet for monogramming.
Finished size is approx. 7" x 10"
One of Marjorie Massey's Quaker tributes and like all the others there are great motifs which can be used on small, pinkeeps, fobs, needlebooks, etc. Shown stitched on tea color dyed linen using DMC-3350, 223, 839, 838, 3768, 502, 3862, 3790, 3726, 315, 3802, 3860, 3740, 3857, 3858. The picture shows both the color version as well as the monochrome version. Also includes an alphabet chart for monogramming

There is no known history of this sampler, except that it was owned by two sisters who resided in Illinois. Their grandparents were originally from Sweden. The focal point is an eagle adorned with maple leaves with an oak leaf border and four symmetrical plant motifs. While the original sampler was stitched on a linen closer to 30 ct., Lila chose to reproduce it using 40 ct. Stars Hollow Blend by R & R Reproductions and stitched it using Classic Colorworks Used Brick. The design size of this adaptation is 7 7/8" x 7 3/4"
