Constant Companion.................Erica Michaels

Constant Companion was inspired by an antique sampler stitched in 1854 by Margaret Farms, and while Linda replicated the vibrant border stitched by Margaret Farms, she used a stitching related quotation that comes from 19th-century author, Nathanial Hawthorne.  For the larger sampler, Linda used 30 ct. "Mariner's Map" linen and stitched using Gentle Arts Simply Wool, Antique Rose, Baby Spinach (3), Buckeye Scarlet (2), Copper, Dungarees, Fragrant Cloves, Honey Dew, Morning Glory, Oatmeal as well as a Simply Shaker Onyx.  The finished size is approx. 10" x 9.5".  Also included in the chart pack is the information and chart for stitching the sampler on 40 ct. silk gauze (not included) using Weeks Dye Works, Blue Jeans, Carrot, Dirt Road, Hibiscus, JayBird, Monkey Grass, Onyx, Sandcastle (10 yds), Turkey Red, Wasabi. The model on silk gauze uses exactly the same border but looks completely different.  Colors are similar, but the background highlights the design in a very distinctive manner.  You would get a similar look if you use darker linen should you elect not to stitch on the silk gauze.  The quotation on the silk gauze sampler comes from the introduction to The Ladies' Work Table Boo:Clear and Practical Instructions in Plain and Fancy Needlework published in 1844.     The design size is approx. 3.75" x 3.75"

A New Constellation and The Heritage Sampler..........Plum Street Sampler

A New Constellation: This design is the story of America's most famous seamstress, Elizabeth Griscom, also known as Betsy Ross.  At the top of the sampler is the declaration made by the Continental Congress when they adopted the flag on June 14, 1777.  This sampler features Quaker elements, as Betsy's family were members of the Society of Friends.  It also portrays Betsy's Marriage to John Ross in 1773, their attendance at Christ Church (where George Washington also attended), her meeting with the "Secret Committe" in 1776, and her marriage in 1782 to Sea Captain Joseph Ashburn (whose ship was captured by the British).  It also depicts her third marriage to John Claypool; John worked at the US Customs House in Philadelphia, and their wedding date is stitched over the Liberty Bell.  The headstone in the last block on the right side of the sampler features her initials and the year of her passing.  This sampler is a companion to The Heritage Sampler published in 2017.

A. Thomas 1882 "The Nellies"....................Hands across The Sea

This sampler is Welsh and is believed to have been about exotic animals that were brought by the circus to the valleys of Wales. The circuses toured to even the smallest of towns and in the 19th century, the development of the railways enabled circuses to travel further.  in July 1848 the town of Tregaron's population was treated to a procession of caravans, horses, bears, and elephants from Batty’s Travelling Menagerie. Some reports state that the elephant drank water contaminated by a lead mine and died shortly afterward. The traveling show -moved on, leaving either a dying or dead elephant behind.  Shown stitched on 40 ct. Marjorie Massey is a designer who likes monochrome or uses just a few colors, which I happen to love.  In this design she does have a pallet of DMC colors used: 3799, 926, 3768, 924, 646, 645, but she also adds it would look beautiful as a monochrome.  Prairie Sampler is shown stitched on a tea-colored fabric, our suggestion is 36 ct. PTP Legacy, however, any light fabric will be perfect.

Quaker Style III..............Prairie Girls Sampling Needleart

What is so wonderful about these Quaker Samplers is that while the sampler as a whole is a fun stitch as you have so many different motifs included, but you can also grab the motifs and stitch just one to put on a small, needlebook, pincushion, fob, etc.  So if you don't like stitching the entire piece it is quite useful for other things.  This particular Quaker Style project was the creation of Majorie Massey.  She chose to stitch on 35 ct. linen, but you can use your favorite count, She used DMC 844, 646, 3768, 501 but Quaker also looks wonderful done in one color.  And check all out the small motifs, sheep, candle, potted plant, trees, birdhouse, basket, flowers, spinning wheel, etc.  Also included is an alphabet for monogramming.

Finished size is approx. 7" x 10"

Quaker Street....................Marjorey Massey

Majorie Massey is new to Salty Yarns and we're very excited about her designs.  Quaker Street is a  prime example of her style, a lot of detail, using only a few colors in a design, and most are monochrome.  Quaker Street is a monochrome stitched on a natural linen and she's stitched using DMC Color Variation 4220, Indigo.  But color is up to you as well as fabric.  This design is going to look great on a variety of fabrics and using a variety of colors.  So do your own favorites.  The design size is  Majorie does suggest using overdyed fabrics such as PTP Legacy (our suggestion) and use your favorite color of overdyed floss.

28 ct. - 21.25 x 11.50

32 ct. - 18.75 x 10.25

36 ct. - 16.50 x 9

Wonderfully Made...............................Erica Michaels Designs

A colorful sampler which matches the exuberance of the design elements - this is based on an antique sampler Linda owns, filled with fanciful flora and fauna. Instead of reproducing the sampler, she chose to adapt it and incorporate the verse from Psalm 139: You are beautiful, for you are fearfully and wonderfully made. First is a lovely piece Linda stitched on silk gauze (included in the chartpak). The pretty green and gold colors are striking on the dark blue background (which is much easier to do on gauze versus stitching on black or dark blue linen.) The linen sampler simply exudes happiness and would make a charming remembrance to mark the birth of a new member of your family. You are sure to enjoy stitching the purple deer, blue ducks, the red rabbits, and rather exotic flowers and plants. The original sampler is extremely faded on the front side, but when removed from the frame, the backside proved to be ever so colorful. It was a bit much for Linda, so the colors used in the sampler shown on linen are muted a bit while maintaining the variety and liveliness 13-year-old Jane Scott stitched into her work.

Stitched on 40 ct. gauze included using

WDW: Artichoke, Banana Pudding, Blue Heron, Blue Suede(10 yds), Yukon Gold

DMC: 937

Finished size is approx. 2" x 3 1/4"

We Live in Hope..............Blackbird Designs

This leaflet consists of two samplers, "We Live in Hope" and "Home From Sea".    On the first page of the leaflet, you will see the original sampler which inspired both of these samplers.  It was stitched in Belfast, Ireland by Eleanor Davey.   One can only imagine a young girl waiting for her father or older brother to return safely from the sea.  Ships are featured on both of the samplers, which makes sense as shipbuilding had begun in earnest in Belfast 42 years before Eleanor completed her sampler.  Belfast was one of the greatest shipbuilding ports in the world.  Some of the largest ships were built there.  Noting the motifs on her sampler it is easy to believe someone in her family sailed the seas.  Both samplers are stitched on 36 ct. Vintage Homespun by R & R Reproductions.

We live in Hope is stitched using WDW Beige, Blue Jeans, Bright Leaf, Caper, Cocoa, Deep Sea, Garrison Green, Kris Bon Bon, Red Pear and Williamsburg.  Sampler size is approx. 11" x 10 5/8" when finished.

Home From Sea is stitched using: Beige, Blue Jeans, Caper, Cocoa, Deep Sea, Dove, Flatfish, Palomino, Red Pear, Schneckley and Williamsburg.  It's finished design size is 6 5/8" x 5 7/8"
