A. Thomas 1882 "The Nellies"....................Hands across The Sea

This sampler is Welsh and is believed to have been about exotic animals that were brought by the circus to the valleys of Wales. The circuses toured to even the smallest of towns and in the 19th century, the development of the railways enabled circuses to travel further.  in July 1848 the town of Tregaron's population was treated to a procession of caravans, horses, bears, and elephants from Batty’s Travelling Menagerie. Some reports state that the elephant drank water contaminated by a lead mine and died shortly afterward. The traveling show -moved on, leaving either a dying or dead elephant behind.  Shown stitched on 40 ct. Ann Gardner 1723....................Hands Across The Sea

Ann Gardner of Pilerton Priery, did not record her age, but we suspect that she was a very young child and that this was her first attempt at stitching a sampler. She diligently recorded the alphabet although her spelling certainly needed improvement. While there are still Gardners living in the English village, we have been unable to find Ann's name anywhere and feel Ann was a diminutive of her given name.

Showed stitched on 53/63 count Sycamore Seedpod using Au Ver a Soie:2213, 4633, 2531, 2925, 3416, 3711, 3724, 4636, 5381, 5384, 5386

Wonderfully Made...............................Erica Michaels Designs

A colorful sampler which matches the exuberance of the design elements - this is based on an antique sampler Linda owns, filled with fanciful flora and fauna. Instead of reproducing the sampler, she chose to adapt it and incorporate the verse from Psalm 139: You are beautiful, for you are fearfully and wonderfully made. First is a lovely piece Linda stitched on silk gauze (included in the chartpak). The pretty green and gold colors are striking on the dark blue background (which is much easier to do on gauze versus stitching on black or dark blue linen.) The linen sampler simply exudes happiness and would make a charming remembrance to mark the birth of a new member of your family. You are sure to enjoy stitching the purple deer, blue ducks, the red rabbits, and rather exotic flowers and plants. The original sampler is extremely faded on the front side, but when removed from the frame, the backside proved to be ever so colorful. It was a bit much for Linda, so the colors used in the sampler shown on linen are muted a bit while maintaining the variety and liveliness 13-year-old Jane Scott stitched into her work.

Stitched on 40 ct. gauze included using

WDW: Artichoke, Banana Pudding, Blue Heron, Blue Suede(10 yds), Yukon Gold

DMC: 937

Fanny Hodges Sampler..........................Threads of Memory

Although this sampler is probably English, one of the most delightful things about it is the set of motifs the sampler has in common with a grouping of samplers out of Deerfield, Massachusetts.  Most particularly, notice the pair of white doves located in the center of the bottom of the sampler.  These doves are nearly, if not exactly, identical to those found on several samplers from the Deerfield Area.  Model stitched on 40 ct. WDW Beige, but can be stitched on any count and stitched using NP Silk fibers:152, 224, 296, 315, 336, 342, 344  (2 skeins), 563, 633, 641, 693, 695, 771, 851, 877, 974, 986, 991, 993. Stitches used are cross stitch, over-one cross stitch, and straight stitch.  Finished size is approx. 15.25" x  18".
